Our customers finally have access to one of the greatest unsung heroes of the plant world – Quercus ilicifolia (Bear Oak). This shrub oak is outstanding in the landscape and well-suited to both modern and naturalistic designs. The thick, glossy leaves and handsome shape make this species an ideal deciduous hedge for homes in new developments. Its wildlife value for nesting birds and food production is excellent. Fall color is a bright yellow.
The seeds for our crops is sustainably harvested from a hunting camp on a high-voltage powerline in EcoRegion 067c. The owners of the camp collect seed so that we can produce seedlings to replace those that the utility company sprays every ten years or so. We finally have enough left over to offer to the adventurous landscape architect or homeowner. Available as 3rd-year trees in two gallon pots. Best planted in the fall after the tree is fully dormant.
